Resolutions to Make For the Common Good

Posted on January 23, 2020 | By Pamela Landwirth

New Year’s resolutions are often centered around ways that we can improve as individuals. But have you ever considered making resolutions that contribute to the greater good? By doing things that improve the lives of others and the world at large, you might find that 2020 is your most fulfilling year yet!

2020 is your chance to be the change you want to see in the world. Here are just a few things you can do this year to give back.

Get Involved! Volunteering for a cause you’re passionate about is a great way to infuse your life with renewed purpose. Is there a local charity you’ve been thinking about getting involved with? Get in touch with them to see if your time or special skills could be of use.

Make a Pledge. If you can’t commit much time to giving back, then maybe a monthly donation is the choice for you. In the nonprofit world, even seemingly small donations make a huge difference. Choose a cause you feel strongly about and make a commitment to periodic donations. Whether it’s $5 every six months or a larger monthly donation, your contribution can change lives.

Donate Regularly. Many people are familiar with the practice of donating their unwanted household items to charities such as Goodwill or The Salvation Army. Instead of making just one or two trips a year, I suggest families make a goal to donate once a month. Assign a designated box for donations in a common area so all family members can contribute. At the end of the month, drop the box off and start again. This habit of giving also reduces clutter in your home.

Go Green. What’s a bright future without a healthy planet? Make a resolution that will benefit the earth. You could:

  • Cut out the plastic. Bring your own bags when you go shopping. Use refillable water bottles rather than buying bottled water. Forgo the plastic straw. There are many ways to reduce your daily plastic consumption.
  • Drive less. If biking to work or to run errands around town is an option, then pedal away! You can also try to plan your day in a way that allows you to drive less distance overall.
  • Bring your own cup. Single use beverage cups are a huge source of unnecessary waste. Make a commitment to bring your own cup for on-the-go beverages.

Plan a Giving Trip. As the president and CEO of Give Kids The World, I see countless volunteers come from far and wide to give their time to our cause. Why not plan a trip centered around service this year? Whether it’s a weekend at the Village or a month-long mission trip overseas, you and your family can explore a new place while donating your time to help others.

Whatever resolution you decide upon, start small, making a sustainable commitment that you can build on later. Don’t miss the chance to make a difference due to taking on more than you can handle.
